In Szencorp news, the Szencorp Building has continued its award-winning ways by picking up the Basset Award for Sustainable Developments from the Property Council of Australia at their National Innovation & Excellence Awards that took place in Sydney in June. The evening was hosted by Channel 9's Richard Wilkins and accompanied by a stellar line up of entertainment including Kate Ceberano and the Scared Weird Little Guys. The award aims to recognise and publicly reward innovation and excellence in sustainable design and development.

The award was open to all development types and was presented to Szencorp and SJB Architects for demonstrating innovation in the implementation of sustainable initiatives. 40 Albert Road beat over 500 entrants from all sectors of the property industry across the country to win this Award!

40 Albert Road is on track to achieving even more energy savings in its second year of operation. In the last 12 months the building has used 68MWH of electricity and 360GJ of gas. This equals a normalized emissions rate of 168 kg CO2/m2 per annum under the Australian Building Greenhouse Rating (ABGR). This puts us at 5 stars (of a maximum of 5 stars) according to ABGR, for which the threshold for 5 stars is 170 kg CO2/m2 per annum. This officially gives 40 Albert Road the maximum possible ratings for office design, water performance and energy performance – a first for Australia!

Now for a fuel cell update…We’re exporting power to the grid as part of Phase 3 of the Ceramic Fuel Cell field trial. For over 1,200 hours the Fuel Cell system on the roof of the building produced 800W stack power with a net export of 400W to the grid. During this phase of the trial a number of key components inside the Fuel Cell system were also tested for function and reliability.

We have been busy (as usual!) touring interested parties around the Szencorp Building and among the visitors in June was celebrity mayor John So, who has agreed to a coordinated promotion campaign for the City of Melbourne’s CH2 building and 40 Albert Road, on the basis that Melbourne is the home of Australia’s sustainable buildings. More on this soon!
