Showing strong leadership to the industry, the AFL have recently completed a lighting control retrofit of their 4,000m2 head office at Telstra Dome, installing a Managed Lighting System (MLS) to control their office lighting. Lighting that previously ran for very long hours will now be switched off automatically in any vacant area, any time of the day.

The MLS consists of passive infrared motion sensors connected in a peer-to-peer network to enable zoning of corridors, open office areas and enclosed offices. Lights now operate automatically, meaning staff are no longer required to use light switches. Lights are only switched on in occupied areas, with corridors linked to all areas to maintain a safely lit exit route whenever there is occupancy on the floor.

“Staff are very happy with the new system”“They understand the reasons for the installation and believe it is a good move. The AFL is also very keen to set an example for the community and believe that this is a positive step.”
AFL House Administration Manager Bernie Dillon

“Works to install the system were completed after hours, mainly on weekends, in order to avoid disruption to staff” states Energy Conservation Systems Project Manager Craig Middleton. “It’s great to watch footage of Telstra Dome on a weekend, now with lights clearly off in the AFL’s office area, while other buildings are still lit up”. A simple retrofit, most works were completed over three weekends, with positive feedback from the electrical contractors on the ease of installation.

As a result of the installation, the AFL are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 386 Tonnes per annum, equivalent to taking around 85 cars off the road permanently. As a further benefit, the capital cost of the works is expected to pay for itself within three years, providing the AFL with a positive financial return within the term of occupancy.

ECS congratulate the AFL on this positive step towards sustainability, and look forward to further improvement works in the near future.
